Peter Mayle is the author of fifteen books, nine of them novels, including the beloved bestseller A Year in Provence. A recipient of the Légion d’Honneur from the French government for his cultural contributions, he lived in Provence with his wife, Jennie, for more than twenty-five years. Mayle died in 2018.

Shoulda read this before our trip to Provence this past June. There are so many places, foods and festivities we could have seen and enjoyed. In "Provence A-Z", Peter Mayle, one of my favorite writers, has compiled nearly all the interesting stuff you need to know if you want to explore and savor this special part of France. "A-Z" is part guide book, part history book, arranged just like a dictionary. You can read it front to back or just pick a couple of topics and dive in. His descriptions of interesting foods, places, people, festivals, markets are all here. As you read you will want to turn back page corners and make some notes about what to see and do on your next trip to France!Mayle lived in Provence for over 20 years and wrote many delightful and engaging books about the people, places and passions of the locals. In "A Year in Provence", "Toujours Provence" and several others, he describes how he and his wife struggle to get comfortable with their status as "permanent tourists". "Provence A-Z" is a great way to see Provence through the eyes of a keen observer and excellent writer.
This is not a book to read from cover to cover, but one to enjoy in snippets of time. Mayle always provides a 'vacation in France' in his charming, witty books, but this one provides sound-byte sized vacations as you wait in line for school pickup, at the drive-thru, in the doctor's waiting room, or even when you mute the annoying commercial on TV. The mini-essays are presented alphabetically, each defining or explaining something wonderfully French in Mayle's beloved style. Great way to keep a smile on your face when all you have are fragments of time for reading.
This book is similar to his others about Provence, in that it is filled with anecdotes and information for Francophiles. It is formatted in an alphabet way, but is thoroughly entertaining! You'll enjoy it if you like his work! I recommend reading all of his Provence books before this one though!
I purchased this for my wife. First off, the book arrived in very good condition, as promised. Almost new, and far better than most used books we've examined. We're looking forward to spending some time in Provence as part of a trip to France in a couple of weeks. Since my wife previously enjoyed reading Peter Mayle's anecdotal tales of life as an Englishman trying to adapt to Provençal culture, weather, and food, this humorous, vivid and useful cataloging of what makes Provence special was a fantastic follow-up! My wife loves it; she says it reads like a novel, not an encyclopedia. Enjoy!
I took Peter Mayle's book Provence A-Z with me when I travelled through the region a few months ago, stopping at the places he seemed to highly recommend and rereading passages pertaining to what I saw. My trip was tremendously enhanced. But Mayle's great gift is the fun he has with the language, and the obvious pleasure he has writing about the area he loves.I love Provence now, too. Thanks, Mr Mayle!
Peter Mayle writes his Provencial tales in such a way that one feels as if they are there, in the cafe, surrounded by the characters and geography of this wonderful part of the world. He isn't superfluous and doesn't embellish, but gives just enough detail to make any story quite interesting and colorful.
I am not very familiar with France, particularly Provence even though I have traveled here before but I have always been in a hurry to rush through and this time I wanted to take my time and understand much more about the culture of Provence and of course the FOOD. This book has been a joy, a delight, funny and a wonderful traveling companion.
I love to read Peter Mayle's books. Why? you ask.....His humor and his love and respect for Provence.
