Gardener's experience and efforts to preserve the Dory history and traditional construction detail in writing this book is impressive. The Dory Book is a balanced combination of history - the evolution of the type and it's many variants - and a builders commentary on traditional construction techniques that accompanies the many plans included.I would have preferred more balanced content with the traditional materials and building techniques - how to use current materials and tools to build the plans - compared to the limited references provided.Overall, though Gardner died in 1995 at age 90, the popularity of this book is testament to the fact he succeeded in his objective.
The Dory Book taught me a lot more than a hands on "course" for which I paid 900 canadian dollars... That said; John Gardner's books have the weight to stand up to their titles. Not only are they great reading, they feel good in your hands when you are reading them. Unlike many other books about boatbuilding which are more like infomercials to get you to buy plans, Gardners books have everything you need to build a boat if you do have the skills to do basic woodworking. I read this book in a week and marked the boats I would like to build. Even if I don't, I know I have the knowledge needed right on my dreams bookcase.
The Dory Book is an excellent book to introduce someone to the dory. This style boat has been widely used and has stood the test of time. The Dory Book by John Gardner has proven time and again to be worth it's weight in gold from beginner to advanced boat builders. This book provides lines and tables of offset for more boats than you would think possible for this price.
if you need historical information on any given particular dory design that has been built during the last 150 years, you need help, but nevertheless, this is your go-to book
Great book, packed with information. Having built dories I have a love, hate relationship with them. Yes they can be good but for most of us I think a general purpose skiff is a better boat (how many of us take small open boats into the North Atlantic). That aside, this book is extremely well written, packed with information, I read it over and over. It really is a great book, a classic

If you are into small boat building this is a great history and training manual relating to the Dory.John Gardner also has a very easy and clear writing style so the information that he delivers is concise and easy to assimilate.One of the best boat histories and construction books I ever read.
It's a wonderful book rich in dory history and detailed for building the craft. i am getting ready this summer to build my own dorry and will be using this as a guide. i recommend it if you are and old classic boat fan or hobbyist or like boating history and if you re just wanting to learn the old ways of building a dory good book.
