While most people are purchasing this book for use on the stage, as a full-time author I've found this to be a useful gem of a book. Sometimes writers get stuck in a rut when they're cranking out new stories. This book gives some excellent alternative ideas to breath new life into characters on a page. It's easy to cross-reference actions and come up with other methods to get your characters into gear and realistically moving/reacting.This makes an excellent reference for the actor, the screenwriter, and the novel author. Recommended!
Truly one of the most helpful books for screenwriters,directors and actors alike. It's well worth buying since it's a book you will have to reference over and over again. I also have found that the book is also just oddly helpful in changing the words I use in everyday life to better communicate.Good size book would fit in most medium to large purses easily fits in a backpack.Light weight. Decent font size.
A friend recommended this book when I was at the point in rehearsal where I had three lines that I just could NOT figure out what to do with. It's indispensable! Sometimes you just need the right nuanced verb to throw you into action.The verbs are categorized alphabetically and by emotional groups. This makes the book useful from the beginning-where I am getting a general idea of my characters' intentions, but need actions to play in rehearsal-all the way to the end when I am being very specific.I just flip through it every now and again, and the words stick. So when you're playing in rehearsal, new actions pop up in your head as options.The introduction was a nice refresher, too.
This is my absolute favorite resource as an off-Broadway actress. It has pages upon pages of actions for you to draw on. If you are struggling to find the right action during a scene, pick up this book and pick an action. The words in this thesaurus will push you to find the right purpose in your scene.
This book is an absolute must for actors. As it says on the back: "Actors need actions. They cannot act moods."I highly recommend it- every word you could possibly need to give more dynamic to your performance is in the book. It's pretty light and easy to carry around.It also has an app which can come in handy on the go!The foreword by Terry Johnson is also very inspiring.
It's a thesaurus of actions which is helpful when choosing specific wants, but I feel like Google could get the job done for free. I've used it only twice...
Every actor needs this book. I've used this as a resource for auditions and roles since I discovered it's existence several years ago. To have a thesaurus full of playable actions helps you work creatively to find interesting ways to play a scene you may not have thought before. This book was also required for my boyfriend's grad school acting program.
Be sure to read the introduction! The instructions on how to use the book are included there. This is very helpful. I can see that the more I use this book, the more I will become familiar with a wider variety of layers that I can add to my acting.
