Nate pours his replete river rescue knowledge into the pages of this book, and his experience and wisdom in the field provide the case studies, reports, and anecdotes that forge the meaningful layout of the text. Although I appreciate this guide book for its great gear comparisons and evaluations, the detailed descriptions of river features and hazards, and the pedagogic design of rescue techniques, I am most grateful for the book's consistent language of risk management and skills practice. Nate does not disguise this book as a magical tome that grants its readers the ability to solve any river rescue scenario. Rather, he directly speaks to his readers, urging them to recognize the high risks of running rivers and the necessity of honing our river rescue "tools" through frequent practice. This book provides great refreshers on techniques and mechanical systems that any seasoned boater will appreciate. At the same time, the NOLS River Rescue Guide serves new paddlers with a superb introduction to the realm of river rescue.
Excellent information if you are going to be on a river. The info is clear and thoughtfully presented and very complete! I decided not to go on the float trip I had scheduled and will probably not do much river running in my life but I highly recommend this one!!!

By far the best book on safety I've ever read. Other sports/activities writers could learn something about how to present information to rescue workers and enthusiasts by imitating the format and intent of this guide.

I found this book very informative and really enjoyed the personal accounts and how they tied in with the topics of the chapters. It was very well laid out and easy to get what you need from it.
