GERALD MCDERMOTT (1941-2012) was an internationally acclaimed author-illustrator of books for children. A graduate of Pratt Institute in New York City and a lifelong artist, he began his career as an animated filmmaker before moving into the creation of children's books based on storytelling traditions from around the world. He was awarded the Caldecott Medal and two Caldecott Honors; his extensive and influential body of work includes six popular picture books focusing on the trickster motif. Returned this book. It was awful... a mean bird drops the turtle and his shell smashes to pieces. What a pleasant image for kids to fall asleep to. There's not really a "trick" as most trickster tales have. If you want a better trickster tale, try "Love and Roast Chicken" -- my kids ADORE that one.
My girls and I love all of these stories by Gerald McDermott. The pictures are bright and catchy and the stories really grab my girls who are 3 and 6. I love that it's one that they can both enjoy together.
Definitly not as good as some of the author other works, but good enough.
I read this to a room full of 3, 4, and 5 year olds and they loved it!
My second grade students love this book ... it meets our state learning standards for reading folk tales from other cultures. It is also an Accelerated Reader book!
Fun books! My daughter loves reading bedtime stories and we have almost bought the whole series!
I htought it had more thanone turtle story in it forn teh description--only one inside, not the fault of the book, but description was difficult
The books in this 'series' are great for teaching stories from other cultures. My students loved the stories and the pictures.
