Mushrooms of the Southeast by Todd F. Elliott and Steven L. Stephenson is going to be a valuable tool for mushroom hunting. Here is why:I live in Georgia and recognize a lot of mushrooms in the book that I have personally found in my region. The key with color coded pages makes the book easy to navigate.Pictures and written descriptions of one species are on the same page which saves me flipping back and forth.Visual identification is very easy. Mushrooms found in the field can be compared with excellent photographs in the book that show each mushroom from different angles and in different stages of growth. I enjoy reading this book. The introduction, the book's organization, the beautiful pictures, and detailed descriptions clearly demonstrate the expertise that went into this book. Now I feel that I do not always need to haul my whole library with me on my mushroom hunts. This one book in my backpack will suffice.

Superb addition! I pre-ordered this months in advance and I'm happy to say it was worth the (long) wait. This flex bound has a glossy cover and is sized right - meaning it's large enough to read (albeit not entirely that comfortable for older eyes like my own) yet small enough to still take along as a field guide if desired (albeit a tad larger). Every page has a full color photograph of the sample item along with brief but pertinent information. I was absolutely delighted to find the official name of at least two mushrooms that I stumbled across in walks but have failed to figure out...until now. The book also includes a glossary and index for easy referencing/cross referencing as well as a small tape measure across the back of the cover to get quick measurements. Absolutely thrilled by this book - makes a great gift for the curious minded, happy hikers, mushroom lovers and just about anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.

Very interesting topic. I enjoy using this to identify the mushrooms I find in my immediate area. This book stands out in that it identifies mainly the ones that are found here, in the south. Most of the other books I have on the topic concentrate on other areas of the country - like the Pacific Northwest - and you really have to read the all the descriptions to find which ones are found in the South. I have been considering setting up a couple of mushroom beds and this book pinpoints those that will naturally do well in my area.

Great book if you love walking in the woods and discovering what you find. Excellent photography and descriptions. Pair this with anything from Paul Stamets and you'll be adding to your edibles in no time.

> Has the best photographs in any such guide that I've seen. Most photos include a the mushrooms in situ in the wild, with (in the same photograph) additional specimens placed to show the gills and other important details. Most photos also contain several specimens at different stages of development, which is important because the appearance of many mushrooms can change radically as the mushrooms mature.> I find it very helpful that the text mentions other similar species -- even if they are not included in the guide. Usually information is given on distinguishing between such similar species. For photos and details of other similar, but not included species, you can always google the other species for comparison. But as a result, you'll probably be far less certain of many of your identifications using this guide. It's frustrating, but it is better to be slight uncertain of an identification (e.g., to family or genus level, but not quite to species level) than certain of a wrong identification.> There is a good short glossary and excellent diagrams explaining the terminology

This book is AWESOME! I could't be more pleased! Besides being completely informative, it's straight-forward, the layout is reader-friendly and the photos are absolutely beautiful! This is the exact kind of reference book I like: clear, colorful and visually appealing with thick, durable, glossy pages. I just said out loud to my husband, "I love this mushroom book! Everything about it! It makes me want to read it." And that's the truth! Seriously one of my best purchases to date! :)

So this book has guide Keys for certain mushroom groups. For example, "Key to Gilled Mushrooms". However, I can't understand how they are to be used and this book does not tell you how to use them. Example : 3. Fruiting Body not as above ........ 15 . I have no idea what they are referencing. Does anyone get it ?

No mushroom field guide is ever complete or it would be impossible to carry into the field. That said, this is imminently portable, contains keys for the most common mushrooms that is absent from many that depend on shape, color and other distinguishing features alone and a nice summary of features that includes how edible they are. It is well worth the price!
