Well known for his environmental justice scholarship, David Pellow here extends sociological inquiry into the realm of socioecological inequality, challenging the humanist boundaries of intersectionality by asking, ‘to what extent are radical environmental and animal liberation movements also struggles over social inequality?’ (p. 3). Pellow invokes the rich histories of slave insurrections, immigrant rights, farm worker, Black Power, Asian American, Chicana/o, and gender justice movements, as well as the everyday work of other civil and human rights activists to exemplify the contexts within which people of color and their allies achieved social justice outcomes by using both mainstreamand direct action strategies. Globally, the social and environmental justice movements of the Anthropocene now articulate what Pellow’s research also describes: a post-humanist intersectional framework linking and challenging ‘the intertwined crises of ecosystem decline, nonhuman species exploitation and extinction, and human oppression’ (p. 2).Pellow calls that framework “Total Liberation.†It is a framework that augments and extends the environmental justice paradigm with the insights of many disciplines – critical animal studies, ecofeminism, critical environmental justice, and critical race theory. Total Liberation frameworktranscends the Enlightenment’s nature/culture dualism and redefines human identity as a political category inextricably engaged with a broader ecological community, capable of rejecting the state, and recognizing humans, nonhuman species, and ecosystems as ‘partners in a collaborative effort for mutual sustenance’ (p. 258).
I only bought this for a class and I really dislike it. 10 out of 10 do not like. and would not recommend.
