Calvinism is a hot topic in the Christian world these days and if I am speaking honestly people on both sides of the issue carry around a lot of misunderstanding as to what the Doctrines of Grace really teach. While this book gets a little dry and a little repetitive at times it is a wonderful synopsis of the five points of Calvinism aka the Doctrines of Grace and helps the read understand exactly what they are and the basic arguments for them from scripture. If you are looking for a place to start understanding the Doctrines of Grace this is a wonderful place to begin. I have given or lent this book out a number of times and will continue to do so.

Pastor Steve Lawson references 5 books that every Christian should read on the doctrines of grace and 2 of those books are by James Montgomery Boice. This book is theologically robust yet easy to read for the layman. This book is a great tool for those looking for an introductory work on the doctrines of grace. Mr. Boice presents his arguments of the doctrines of grace in a very scriptural and winsome style. This book richly founded in the text of scripture and thorough on expounding the doctrines of grace FROM THE SCRIPTURES. Here are a few quotes from the book:“People suppose that if God is going to save certain individuals, then he will save them, and there is no point in our having anything to do with it. But it does not work that way. Election does not exclude the use of the means by which God works, and the proclamation of the gospel is one of those means (1 Cor. 1:21).”“Moreover, it is only the truth of election that gives us any hope of success as we proclaim the gospel to unsaved men and women. If the heart of a sinner is as opposed to God as the Bible declares it to be, and if God does not elect people to salvation, then what hope of success could we possibly have in witnessing? If God does not call sinners to Christ effectively, it is certain that we cannot do so either. Even more, if the effective agent in salvation is not God’s choice and call – if the choice is up to the individual or to us, because of our powers to persuade people to accept Christ – how could we even dare to witness? For what if we make a mistake? What if we give a wrong answer? What if we are insensitive to the person’s real questions? In that case, people will fail to believe. They may eventually go to hell, and their eternal destiny will be partly our fault, and how could any thinking, feeling Christian live with that?”“But on the other hand, if God has elected some to salvation and if he is calling those elected individuals to Christ, then we can go forth boldly, knowing that our witness does not have to be perfect, that God uses even weak and stuttering testimonies to his grace and, best of all, that all whom God has chosen for salvation will be saved. We can be fearless, knowing that all who are called by God will come to him.”This book is used by many seminaries and would be a book you will go back to over and over again. Here is a link to pastor Steve Lawson recommending the book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n56LZnrdCTgIf this review was helpful please rank it.

This is probably my favorite book on the doctrines of grace (the five points of Calvinism.) It is clear, understandable, insightful, humble, worshipful, balanced, and wonderfully pastoral. It also has some great material looking at the roots and fruits of Calvinism in Church History (which testifies to the beauty and sanctifying effect of these biblical doctrines of God's grace.) Along with John Piper's "Five Points", I think Boice and Ryken's book is one of the best introductions to Calvinistic theology for a person who's new to these ideas, and equally edifying for the committed Calvinist.

Understanding the "Doctrines of Grace" has become quite clouded in recent years because of a re-emergence of Arminian theology. This book fills a needed vacuum in the field of Calvinistic thought that is necessary and encouraging. Once read and understood, the book will answer so many questions in a practical way.

It started out a little slow but once it got to the heart of the Doctrines of Grace, it provided verses to back each doctrine as well as apologetics to verses that seem to contradict the doctrines. Towards the end of the book they got to science and the arts which kind a lost me but overall great book, worth the read

I found this book helpful for me as I woken through the Doctrines of Grace. It helped me to have a fuller understanding of a theology that I was working through for the first time. A must read if you are coming to see the doctrines of grace as a biblical truth.

This book captures the doctines of grace taught throughout scripture and the emphasis on God' glory. It not only does a great job of presenting the 5 points of Calvinism or "reformed theology", but it also speaks of the humility of what is the byproduct and the effect of the revelation of the merciful God of the bible. There is absolutely no room for arrogance that is all to often associated with what some call "Calvinism". It is a great introduction to what true Calvinism is all about. James Boice was a godly man who lived a life of dedication to humbly serve God and others, and Phillip Ryken continues to teach and stand for the truths of these gracious doctrines that God has made evident in scripture. I highly recommend this book.

I learned so much while studying this book. It is important to throughly under stand the doctrine of my belief. Which is Jesus Christ died on the cross in order to forgive the sinner. There is no way to the father except through Christ. The author explains throughly and keeps the information easy to read and understand excellent
