Dr. Rachelle M. Smith has served as Director of Composition at Emporia State University for the last sixteen years. She did her doctoral work at Texas Christian University with a specialization in rhetoric and composition. She enjoys teaching science fiction by women, as well as classic mysteries by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, and Agatha Christie.Dr. Kenneth Springer is a developmental psychologist. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1990, he served on the faculty of SMU’s Psychology Department before moving to the Simmons School of Education and Human Development in 2002. Dr. Springer currently teaches undergraduate classes in educational psychology, as well as research methods and statistics for graduate students.Dominick Marullo, M.A., is currently a high school English teacher with a Bachelors degree in English/Education and a Masters in Writing. Our son has successfully completed fourteen CLEP examinations for a total of 48 transferrable college credits. He has used the REA books in almost all cases supplemented by the DIVE curriculum for the advanced math and Biology tests. I used this book for a few weeks before my exam. I took one practice exam right away, then studied from it a little bit each day and then took the remaining practice exams.I got a 74 out of 80 on the real clep. This book really helped a lot and I plan on buying Rea Clep books before all the Cleps that I will take.This book breaks down the material into a few easy chapters and each chapter is clear and easy to read. I felt that all the material was adequately covered in this book.The only downside is that it only has four practice exams; two for the College Comp. and two for the Modular. One of each exam is on the cd; the others are only in the book. I would recommend getting other Clep preparation materials just for their practice exams. I found several Clep study guides in my school's library which had about six more practice exams.If you spend time reading through this book and you take as many practice exams as you can find you will probably pass.
I used this book as my only book to pass the English CLEP and I passed with a 55 I believe. This book was not boring and I enjoyed learning about English. The CD was useful also since you are timed but it can't grade your essays. The CD has the exact same tests that are in the back of the book.
3 stars because the disk is outdated and PC only. The book gives a great review on English concepts and helps you understand what to look for on the test. I'm not one who can remember what participles or possessive pronouns are, but I am able to formulate a sentence without making too many grammatical errors. This book helps explain how and why the english language just fits together.
Title clearly stated CD included. CD sleeve still there, CD removed. Having the practice tests on the CD is the reason I bought this item.Totally false advertising.
I bought this book with the intention of taking the CLEP College Composition and Composition Modular exams. I read the book, used the software, and took both exams and passed! It was a consolidated resource of (almost) everything you need to know to pass the exams. Although, you do need to have a basic understanding of English to even consider taking the exams in the first place.
I've appreciated all the guides I've read by REA (the publisher). Concise and well written. If you are getting 60% on the practice exams in this book then you should pass the real exam easily. Definitely worth the money. If you're short on time and tight on funds this is about the best buy. The practice exams in this book are one paper and CD. The computer exams, same questions as the printed ones in the book, are nice because the have a timer to work against like the real exam.You may also want the "Official CLEP Study Guide" by the CollegeBoard, the people you write the CLEP exams, even though it is really only good for the practice exams.
I have been very pleased with the REA books I have used in the past, and this book is no exception. Very good overview of the topics covered in the test, along with adequate preparation for the essay portion.However, in order to prepare well for the essay portion of this CLEP, at least 10 timed practice essays need to be completed. A good supplementary book to this one which provides more practice essay questions is Cracking the CLEP by The Princton Review.
